Chapter 87: Tri-Elemental Direwolf

"A Tri-Elemental Direwolf..." My companion replies matter-of-factly to my sudden outburst. "This is bad, Quinlan. Prepare yourself for an uphill battle. Rather than attacking, just play it safe and let me deal with it, though it will be difficult even for me. Damn, if only we had Blossom with us... She could easily sneak attack this creature while I draw its attention." She curses under her breath.

"It is what it is... You will have to make do with little old me. What a badass-looking creature, by the way. My entire body is shaking from fear, its sheer presence is absolutely overwhelming me..."

Standing a towering 10 feet (3 meters) tall, the Tri-Elemental Direwolf is a fearsome amalgamation of the elements.

The Direwolf’s fur is a mesmerizing blend of colors, each representing its multiple elemental affinities.

Icy blue streaks run along its back that shimmer with an icy aura.

Fiery orange and red embers glow within its fur, smoldering and flickering like a living flame.

Intermittent arcs of electricity dance and crackle along its limbs, casting an eerie, stormy light around the chamber.

Its eyes are a haunting mixture of blue, orange, and yellow. The colors are swirling with chaotic energy that seems to pierce through my very soul.

The Direwolf’s fangs are elongated and sharp while also glistening with frost, steam, and tiny sparks. Its claws are capable of leaving a trail of ice, fire, or lightning in their wake with each move.

As it steps forward, the ground trembles before it releases a growl that’s a perfectly menacing blend of crackling ice, roaring flames, and rumbling thunder. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

This beast is not just a boss monster; it is a manifestation of the element’s fury, a formidable opponent that I’m sure will test our skills and teamwork to the limit.

That’s right; despite Ayame’s words, I will be looking for good opportunities to do my part in achieving victory. I refuse to become a hindrance by trying to stroke my slightly wounded ego by attacking it without a plan, though. Ayame will be the main character of this battle and me her sidekick.

The boss monster’s entire form radiates a palpable aura of menace and majesty.

"Prepare yourself, Quinlan..." Ayame warns with a low whisper that’s charged with emotions. "This is going to be one hell of a fight. I’m honestly getting a bit excited..." She couldn’t help but grin as her battle-maniac persona was beginning to slip through its usually obstructive veil.

...

- PoV: Ayame -

As the heavy doors of the chamber clank shut behind us, I feel a familiar rush of anticipation coursing through me.

A wicked grin of exhilaration due to the upcoming confrontation threatens to emerge on my features but I fight back against it with all my might. I’m a noble lady after all, not a battle junkie, nor a crazed maniac. I don’t want to give the wrong impression to my cherished student, after all.

Standing before us is the towering form of the Tri-Elemental Direwolf with its massive frame brimming with elemental fury. My heart thrums from the sheer excitement that courses through my veins.

This thrill, this sense of mortal danger is a feeling I’ve almost forgotten during my year-long captivity, but thanks to Quinlan, this is the second time I get to experience such a wonderful adrenaline rush in the span of only four days.

"[Eternal Spirit of the Unyielding]..." I intone my spell before feeling a surge of energy wash over me, sharpening my senses and boosting my physical stats. I’ve never been one to back down from a challenge, and this giant mutt won’t be able to change that.

In the war troll fight I was already halfway depleted of my mana and energy reserves before the confrontation even began, but today I haven’t cast a single spell yet, fully expecting to face a difficult boss battle on the fifth floor, though this monster surpassed even my already high expectations.

It could’ve been something as simple as a goblin warrior if one of the normal monsters of the floor was a goblin and we were lucky enough to roll it as the boss monster’s archetype.

Despite a monster’s level being a significant deciding factor in its overall prowess, not all races are born equal. A level 5 goblin would be absolutely eradicated by a level 5 dragon, or, in this case, a level 5 Tri-Elemental Direwolf.

The beast’s eyes lock onto mine.

There’s an intelligence there, a challenge, and it honestly makes my blood sing. The war troll was a creature that heavily relied on its high Vitality and Strength stats, but this one is different; a cunning opponent that’s more than a simple stat-checking creature.

I meet its gaze without a single flinch.

My beloved father’s lecture repeats in my head; "never show weakness to a beast, Ayame. They’ll smell your desperation in the air. Even if you feel afraid, grit your teeth and be stalwart. Crush it with your overwhelming talent and long hours spent dutifully training in the way of the blade. No beast can hold a candle to Fujimori swordsmanship."

The boss monster raises its head toward the ceiling and lets out an ear-drum-shattering howl.

White currents begin swirling throughout its fur, and with astonishing speed, it lunges at me. Clearly, it uses its lightning affinity to boost its speed, just like the Thunderfang did. However, unlike that simpler monster, this one has a triple elemental affinity and an incredibly sturdy and strong body to boot.

"[Flash Step]!" I dash forward, drawing it away from Quinlan so he isn’t caught in the crossfire.

The Direwolf reacts almost instantly as it senses my sudden arrival as if it has a sixth sense.

It leaps out of the way of my [Crescent Moon Cut] before the energy wave slices into the floor where it should’ve stood.

For a creature of this size, I must admit that it is amazingly agile.

It spins are mid-air to face me just before the Direwolf swipes its massive claws toward me, and from each claw erupts a fiery beam.

I activate my only defensive spell, [Spirit Shield], to protect myself. The burning projectiles crash into it and immediately begin threatening to break it into smithereens.

Perhaps it senses an opportunity as in the next moments, the Direwolf howls fiercely as it summons a barrage of ice spears that rain down upon me.

Then, it immediately moves to charge at me while the projectiles threaten to kill me on the spot. "[Storm of Wind]!" I shout my incantation before performing a series of rapid slashes that conjure gusts of wind to deflect the icy barrage and thwart the wolf’s charge at the same time.
